Why It’s Still Too Dry for Scarifying and Aerating Lawns

At Lawn Force, we know many of our customers are eager to get their lawns back into top condition after such a long, dry spell. Treatments like scarifying (removing moss and thatch) and aerating (relieving soil compaction) are essential parts of a healthy lawn care programme. However, the current weather means it’s not the right time to carry them out just yet.

Why Timing Matters

Both scarifying and aerating involve working into the soil and root zone. For the best results, the ground needs to be moist, soft, and pliable. When soil is too dry, two things happen:

  • Aeration: Instead of creating clean, deep channels to help air, water and nutrients reach the roots, the tines simply bounce off or shatter dry soil, causing little benefit (and sometimes even damage).

  • Scarifying: On dry, stressed grass, scarifying can tear up more than just moss and thatch. It risks ripping out healthy grass plants and leaving the lawn thin and patchy.

This is why we wait for the right conditions — it’s not just about completing the job, it’s about doing it properly so your lawn thrives afterwards.

When Will It Be Right?

Realistically, we’re looking towards the end of September before we can begin these treatments. The weather will ultimately decide. We need a period of rain to soften the ground and allow your lawn to recover properly after these more intensive processes.

Why Patience Pays Off

Lawn care is about working with the seasons, not against them. Holding off a few weeks now means we can deliver:

  • Cleaner, deeper aeration holes

  • Gentler scarification with less risk of grass loss

  • A quicker recovery and healthier regrowth in autumn

What You Can Do in the Meantime

While we wait for the weather to change, you can still:

  • Keep lawns at a sensible mowing height (not too short).

  • Clear debris and fallen leaves to allow maximum light and air flow.

  • Stay patient — as soon as conditions are right, we’ll be in touch to start treatments.

✅ At Lawn Force, our priority is always to treat lawns at the right time, in the right way, so you get the best long-term results. We’ll keep a close eye on conditions and update you as soon as scarification and aeration become possible.

What more do you want?

I have been using Lawn Force for about 20yrs. At one time they 'raised' Lawn that had sunk in one area, a couple of years after landscaping had been done. People told me it couldn't be done - but Lawn Force did it and the following year you couldn't 'see the join'! They are a great company who charge a reasonable price and are really good at communication. I would highly recommend them.
